My Short Stories

While I have always been drawn to longer, more complex narratives, I remain grateful for my training as a short story writer.

The following stories represent my earliest published work, which appeared in the highlighted literary journals.

Permafrost, v. 31.1

"The Catch"

My first published short story, based on real events I witnessed during a wild horse encounter on a 2003 horsepacking expedition with the National Outdoor Leadership School in the Wind River Wilderness of Wyoming.

Cold Mountain Review, v. 38.1

"Siobhan"

This story was inspired by one of what became a slew of news articles in the late 2000s about deadly cruise ship passenger mishaps.

The Fourth River, Issue 9

"Another Ocean"

The first of my short stories set in fictional Raker Harbor, Maine, inspired by a childhood of watching lobstermen and pondering the divide between native Mainers and the people “from away” who annually flood the rugged coast. This story gave rise to my initial idea for the novel by the same title.

Passages North, v. 34.1

"Changing Water"

The second of my Raker Harbor stories, wherein my “Another Ocean” characters take further shape.

Sycamore Review, Issue 24.2

"Off Season"

The third of my Raker Harbor stories whose (altered) characters appear in my upcoming novel.

Prism Review, Issue 14

“Man on a White Horse”

Inspired by a quirky news article and my love of the American West, this story evolved to depict a lonely mother’s grief for a fallen soldier.
